Air Vest Canisters

Air vests used by horse riders contain gas canisters that are critical to their protective function. These vests rapidly inflate in the event of a fall to cushion the rider from injury.

WE ARE UNABLE TO SEND THESE INTERNATIONALLY.

What Are the Canisters in Air Vests?

The canisters used in equestrian air vests are CO₂ (carbon dioxide) cartridges. These are pressurized metal cylinders, and when activated, they rapidly release CO₂ gas into air bladders inside the vest to provide instant inflation.

Materials

  • Outer shell: Made of steel or aluminium, depending on the brand.

  • Contents: Filled with compressed CO₂ gas (usually in liquid form under pressure).

  • Seals and valves: Include puncture caps and sealing rings to ensure no leakage before deployment.

How They Work

  1. Tether System: The air vest is connected to the saddle by a lanyard. If the rider falls off, the lanyard is pulled with enough force.

  2. Trigger Mechanism: This action causes a mechanical trigger to activate a spring-loaded pin or piercing needle.

  3. Canister Activation: The needle pierces the CO₂ canister, releasing gas.

  4. Inflation: Airbags inflate within 100–250 milliseconds, depending on the model.

Sizes and Capacities

  • Canister sizes vary (e.g., 45g, 50g, 60g) depending on the size of the vest and the coverage area needed.

  • Single-use: Each canister is one-time use and must be replaced after deployment.

  • Weight-specific: Riders must use the correct size cartridge according to their body weight and vest model.

Interesting Facts

  • Cold Inflation: The CO₂ gas expands rapidly and feels cold—this is due to the Joule-Thomson effect, a principle of thermodynamics.

  • Noise factor: The inflation makes a distinct “pop” or hiss, which can startle the horse. Some brands work to reduce this.

  • Reusable system: Once a canister is deployed, riders can reset the mechanism themselves and replace the canister, making it reusable.

  • Similar tech: This same concept is used in motorcycle vests, some life jackets, and avalanche airbags.

  • R&D innovation: Some modern air vests include sensors to detect a fall electronically before deployment—these still rely on CO₂ cartridges for inflation.
