Measuring for the Right Size Body Protector
Measuring for the Right Size Body Protector
Finding the perfect size isn’t just about comfort—it’s about safety and freedom of movement in the saddle. A well-fitted body protector should feel snug, like a secure hug, without holding you back. Grab a soft tape measure (and a friend if possible), wear your usual riding clothes, and follow these simple steps.

1. Chest Measurement
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your chest—just under your armpits and across the nipple line. Keep it snug but not tight. For accuracy, take two measurements: one as you breathe in, and another as you breathe out. The average gives you the most realistic fit.
💡 Why it matters: The chest measurement ensures your body protector isn’t pinching or gaping. Too loose, and it won’t stay in place during a fall; too tight, and you’ll feel restricted when jumping or reaching for reins.
2. Waist & Front Length Measurement
Fasten a belt around your waist, just under your bottom ribs. From the top of the belt, bring the tape measure up and over your shoulder, then down to meet the belt again at your back. This determines the front length of your protector.
💡 Why it matters: This measurement ensures your protector covers enough of your torso while allowing you to lean forward over fences without the front digging into your stomach.
3. Back Length Measurement
Sit in your saddle (or on a firm chair if that’s easier) and find the C7 vertebra—the bony bump at the base of your neck. Measure from there down to where the protector should finish, leaving a finger’s width between the bottom edge and the saddle seat.
💡 Why it matters: If your body protector is too long, it will press against the saddle when you ride, pushing the whole vest upward. Too short, and it won’t offer enough coverage. This balance is key to both safety and comfort.
